I began my life as a young professional about ten years ago. As I embarked on this new chapter of my adult life, I was getting approached by financial advisors. They said they wanted to help me with my money. I was young and incompetent when it came to managing money. I didn’t have a great understanding of how to plan for my future.
After dodging a few advisors and declining meetings, I finally said yes to one. We had mutual friends, and I assumed he would be the best person to help me. Rule of Thumb – Your relationship to your “financial advisor” rarely matters. How much money you can make them does.
I had a couple of meetings and sat through the dog and pony show. He gave a recommendation that was out of left-field for me – Whole Life Insurance Annuity. What the heck is this?! I was confused, skeptical, and frustrated. It was time to start doing my own research.
I spent a few hours scouring the internet. After doing my due diligence, the outcome was clear. I had a “financial advisor” who was taking advantage of a young adult. I was getting an offer greased in snake oil that was going to pad his wallet more than mine. Note: A Whole Life Insurance Annuity is not a great financial tool for 95% of the population but it does generate great money for the folks selling them.
This planted the seed in my mind. If this is happening in this one situation, it must be happening everywhere. IIt became my mission to discover all the places people get taken advantage of. I decided I wanted to help others by simplifying this convoluted system.
Investments, cars, homes, cable bills, insurance, credit cards, banks – I’ve become obsessed in understanding these different mediums and institutions. Not only educate me but then, in turn, educate those around me.
I have a persistent interest in getting to the root of motivations to expose them. To understand their incentives so I can protect yours and mine.
The financial world has been made unnecessarily complicated and deceptive…
